Vascular Surgery

Dr Carlos Carbonell

A vascular surgeon is a specialist who focuses on the blood vessel system of the human body. Vascular surgery entails examination and the surgical treatment of blood vessels.

The treatment of arteriosclerotic damage of the blood vessel system by means of vessel transplantation forms an important part of vascular surgery.

For transplantation of veins, a vein, or part of a vein, from the patient himself can be used if it is not needed elsewhere.

For transplantation of arteries, most of the time a synthetic, arterial prosthesis is needed but sometimes part of a patient’s own artery can be used.

If, for example, the aorta and its bifurcation into the two large pelvic arteries need to be replaced, it is called a Y-graft and is always synthetic.
